Photo of the Day: Labor Day

American flags line Walnut Street in Murphysboro, IL. on Labor Day weekend. Labor Day was created as a day for American laborers to celebrate their economic and social accomplishments. It is held on the first Monday in September and was first celebrated in 1882 in the state of New York. Many other states followed in following years. It wasn’t until in 1894, when President Grover Cleveland made the day into a national holiday. This led to most workplaces and schools closing each year on Labor Day. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020.
