NLCS returns to Atlanta (baseball)

The National League Championship Series swings back into Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium tonight with the St. Louis Cardinals holding on to a 3-2 lead over the Braves in the best-of-seven series. The Braves sent the series back to Atlanta following a 14-0 rout Monday night in St. Louis. Atlanta will send righthander Greg Maddux to the mound against either lefthander Donovan Osborne or righthander Alan Benes. The Cardinals need just one win to make the trip to the World Series and face the New York Yankees.

Former boxing champ battles coma (boxing)

Former world boxing champion Wilfredo Benitez, who became the youngest boxer to be inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame, is in a coma in a San Juan hospital and is listed in critical condition. The 36-year-old Benitez, a member of the 1996 Hall of Fame class, was found unconscious in his bed by his mother Friday and was immediately taken to an area emergency room for treatment. Benitez suffers from post-traumatic encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain. Benitez is a three-time world champion after capturing titles in the junior welterweight, welterweight and super welterweight divisions.

Brooks done for the year (football)

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Robert Brooks will miss the rest of the season because of a torn left knee ligament he suffered in the Packers’ 23-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers Monday night. Brooks’ injury occurred on Green Bay’s first play from scrimmage when he came down awkwardly on his leg. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears have decided to place veteran quarterback Erik Kramer on injured reserve, meaning he will miss the rest of the season because of two herniated discs in his neck.

New stadium brewing in Milwaukee (baseball)

The Milwaukee Brewers are getting a new stadium. The Brewers stadium board announced that construction on the team’s new facility, fittingly named Miller Park, will begin Oct. 30. The new park will be built alongside County Stadium, the current home of the Brewers.

May out for two months (hockey)

Buffalo Sabres’ left winger Brad May is expected to miss at least two months of action after undergoing surgery to repair an injured right shoulder. The 24-year-old May first injured his shoulder during the World Championships in April. May hasn’t played since reinjuring it when he got into a run-in with Calgary right winger Ronnie Stern Oct. 6.

Bryant NBA transition complete (basketball)

After playing at the high school level a year ago, Kobe Bryant has been cleared to play for the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant, who suffered a fractured left wrist during a pickup game Sept. 2, was acquired from the Charlotte Hornets during the summer.

Unbeaten heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, then 21, scored a seventh-round knockout over challenger Tyrell Biggs in Atlantic City. Tyson became the youngest heavyweight title holder when he took the WBC crown from Trevor Berbick in 1986 at the age of 20.
