Brace yourself, my friends. I have come today not to criticize, but to praise. I will not call for the resignation of the administration, the blanket revocation of everyone’s driver’s license but mine, or a good, hearty slap up the side of Martin Short’s head. Today I come before you not as a premature curmudgeon, but as a benevolent god, dispersing wisdom and positive feelings from on high.

According to my all-seeing eye, YOU will go to Women in the Director’s Chair, and you WILL enjoy it. Not only that, you will learn something, which is more than you can say for that 8 a.m. lecture you sleep through.

Women in the Director’s Chair is a touring showcase of the films of female directors, dedicated to raising the visibility of women artists and gender issues. By supporting the production of alternative works, the people behind it hope to challenge demeaning stereotypes. This stop on the tour is sponsored by Film Alternatives, the hard-working folks who bring you the widely acclaimed Big Muddy Film Festival every spring. The films selected this year bring a welcome taste of novelty to Carbondale, as well as wet our appetites for the Big Muddy.

Do you want to do something different, or would you rather stare at the wall? Go to Women in the Director’s Chair.

The choice is simple:Do you want another week of same-old, same-old, or would you rather take a chance on something that could invigorate your perceptions, give you a new perspective, or just make one day stand out from the faceless mass of a semester? Film festivals aren’t just for film students, you know; they’re for anyone with eyes, ears, or a brain.

Film Alternatives deserves your support, because they do their best to bring entertainment around here that’s not the same mainstream puke you always feed on. In their honor, try something different on Tuesday. Instead of seeing the latest nap-in-your-popcorn “thriller” or another cloying romantic comedy, go to the Student Center, pop down a third of a theater’s ticket price, and let something new and interesting have room in your head.
