Free community screening of the film Caminando Hacia La Autonomous/Walking Towards Autonomy (53 min) followed by group discussion. The film examines traditional communal forms of self governance practiced in Cherán, Mexico, after community members expelled all government officials, police, military, and political parties.

“Cherán K’eri is an indigenous Purépecha community located in the state of Michoacán, México. In 2000 organized crime began to appear in the community. Over time the presence of drug traffickers and their control over the community began to grow substantially. They began to illegally log precious forests in the community. When community member attempted to defend their forests they were assassinated and disappeared. The forests were devastated and the community was tormented; they felt as if their lives were in danger.
At sunset Cherán would turn into a ghost town.
In April, 2011, a group of women decided to end this situation: they began to blockade streets in order to stop the loggers. The entire community quickly reacted and joined the uprising. This is a story of a community uprising, expelling ineffective government and securing systems to save their community and return to a traditional form of self governance.
In this film, four years after the uprising, community members tell their stories of how they built their own reality, one in which the people of Cherán K’eri truly have a voice. ” —http://www.sustainlv.org/event/walking-towards-autonomy/
