Opinion: Saying farewell to Kobe Bryant

A bomb dropped on the sports world this Sunday, when the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna was announced via social media. After several false reports were released, it was finally confirmed that Bryant and his daughter, along with seven others, were killed in a helicopter crash on the way to a basketball event.

Southern Illinois men’s basketball found their first true road win of the season after using a big second half against Illinois State. SIU outscored the Redbirds (6-14, 1-7 MVC) 41-29 in the second half to lead them to a 58-55 victory at Normal, Ill.

Southern Illinois women’s basketball used their last 13 minutes of play to recover from a 26-point deficit and win over University of Evansville. The Salukis (11-6, 3-3 MVC) travelled to Indiana to claim their fifth road victory of the season, 70-57 over the Purple Aces (3-15, 0-7 MVC).

The Salukis (10-10, 4-3 MVC) got off to a slow start against the University of Northern Iowa, but it was their play for the rest of the game that got a crowd of 4,319 on their feet at Banterra Center. SIU brought the number one team in the MVC down in a hard-fought 68-66 win.

Southern Illinois men’s basketball didn’t disappoint a crowd of 4,337 at Banterra Center during their eighth-straight win on their home floor. The Salukis (9-10, 3-3 MVC) used a big second half scoring run to take down the Drake University Bulldogs 66-49 on Jan. 19.

Loyola pulled away in the second half as Saluki shots weren’t falling during Thursday’s matchup at Chicago. Southern Illinois (8-10, 2-3 MVC) trailed 31-26 at the half after shooting 11-for-27 in the field but only 2-for-12 at the three-point line.

The Salukis battled with no fear in the game against Drake, disregarding preseason polls and previous national rankings.  Despite being ranked fifth in this year’s MVC Preseason Poll, the SIU women’s basketball team took the floor today against the Drake University Bulldogs, who were ranked as the number one team in the poll, with confidence and a chip on their shoulder.
