Arch Sadness: Salukis fall in heart-breaker to Bradley

A three-point conversion play from Bradley was the dagger that ended SIU’s 2019-2020 season. The Salukis held a commanding lead over the Braves coming out of the halftime break, but the offensive efforts from the Peoria team in the final minutes of the game proved to be detrimental to Southern allowing Bradey to steal the lead and take the win, 64-59.

The Salukis ended their two game losing streak this evening with a win against Loyola University. Southern Illinois (16-12 MVC 8-9) took the lead in the first half and Loyola (15-13 MVC 6-11) could close the gap.

Regular season play for the SIU Men’s Basketball Team ended this afternoon with a 84-59 loss to Missouri State University. The Bears took the lead early in the first half and held it for the remainder of the game extending it to a margin as large as 30 points. This evening’s matchup was Southern’s third-straight conference loss and the Salukis now sit in the fifth place position in the MVC.

A three-point jumper from senior guard Kristen Nelson in the final 30 seconds of play appeared to have rescued Southern Illinois from another heartbreaking loss to Bradley University this evening, but foul trouble in the remaining time allowed the Braves to run away with a 61-57 win over the Salukis. Junior guard Makenzie Silvey was SIU’s top scorer with 16 points. She was followed closely by Nelson and junior forward Abby Brockmeyer, who each tallied 12 points.

The senior night celebration for the SIU Men’s Basketball team soured fast this evening as the Salukis trailed the Indiana State University Sycamores entering the second half of play. Indiana State (17-11, 10-7 MVC) took the lead at the end of the first half and Southern (16-14,10-7 MVC) was unable to regain enough momentum to close the gap losing its final home game at Banterra Center, 77-68.

It appeared that SIU had slain the Missouri Valley Conference giant that is the University of Northern Iowa this afternoon, but a scoring drought in the second half proved to be detrimental for the Salukis taking away the hopes of an upset. Southern held a 10-point advantage over the number-one seeded Panthers entering the second half, but a 6-2 scoring run quickly cut the lead down in the second period. From there, UNI proceeded to outscore SIU and take the win, 64-52.

Southern snaps losing streak with defeat of Indiana State

After losing three straight conference games, SIU has regained its confidence with a 60-42 win over the Indiana State Sycamores. The Salukis were led by senior forward Nicole Martin, who notched a near double-double performance, putting up 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. McCallister pitched in 12 points behind Martin to contribute to the Southern offensive efforts.

The SIU men’s basketball team took the floor at Banterra Center against the University of Evansville tonight with a chip on their shoulder after having lost their last two conference matchups.

Recent successes help prepare Saluki swim and dive for conference championships

Junior Juliana Carvalho, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, studying art, competes in the 100 yard backstroke alongside a competitor on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019 at the SIU vs. Arkansas-Little Rock swim meet  in the Dr. Edward J. Shea Auditorium. Carvalho placed fourth with a time of 1:01.61.
