Jacob Beaty, 5, trots during his therapeutic horse riding lesson Saturday at Giant City Stables. Jessica Beaty, Jacob’s mother, said trotting is Jacob’s favorite part of the therapy. “A lot of kids with autism will shake their hands to feel their hands or they’ll do a kind of babbling to hear themselves,” Jessica said. “So when they’re on the horse, just that movement and that rhythm is like a physical stimulation for them that’s very soothing. … In an area like southern Illinois where we don’t have a lot of resources, this program is invaluable. A lot of the people that help are just people volunteering their time, so it’s very meaningful to have the community provide something like this for our kids that really need it. … We’ve just seen Jacob blossom.” — May 21, 2016, Makanda, Ill.
