Four people were shot outside ABC Liquors and Tres Hombres Mexican Restaurant and Bar in Carbondale shortly after 10:00 p.m.

One suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to a St. Louis area hospital – the other three injured were treated at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Jody L. Pullen Jr., of Carbondale, has been named a suspect by Carbondale Police.

“Carbondale Police detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Pullen for charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm,” according to the release.

Pullen is considered armed and dangerous – anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact law enforcement. He pleaded guilty to a domestic battery charge in 2018 – a Class 4 Felony, according to records in Judici.

A maroon Ford hatchback – multiple windows shattered –sat in between the two buildings as investigators scoured the scene.

About nine squad cars blocked off a portion of N. Washington Street as police conducted their investigation with the Carbondale Fire Department providing additional lighting to the scene.

Tim Trocke, senior studying hospitality and tourism management from Wauconda, said he was at the restaurant with his girlfriend, Nadia, when she went to the bathroom.

“She heard what sounded like six or seven gunshots and then someone next to her said ‘I think that was a paintball gun,” Trocke said. “Everyone was just running into chaos.”

Trocke said he ran into the women’s bathroom because it was the closest door to him and said he was unsure if the shooter was going to enter the building.

“It was just crazy,” Trocke said. “You never think it will happen to you […] it was from casual to chaos in an instant.”

Jeff Grubbs, Carbondale Police Chief, said the shooting was the result of a dispute among several acquaintances, in an interview with the Southern Illinoisan. Two people injured were involved in the dispute and the other two injured were bystanders, Grubbs said.

A man named Rico, 28, who refused to give his last name and claimed to be a cousin of one of the victim’s cousins, cried out with his hands extended to the sky as police set up evidence markers.

“Jesus! Jesus!” Rico yelled. “This is in your hands!”

He said a group of individuals went through the liquor store drive through when an individual approached them on foot and shot at the vehicle.

Simone Cohen, a friend of three of the victims, said she didn’t initially know what was going on when she drove by.

“I was just coming back from Murphysboro and I saw so many police cars, I didn’t know if someone just got pulled over,” Cohen, of Carbondale, said. “I was pulling up, then I saw the caution tape and knew was going on.”

Cohen said she believes at least one victim was airlifted to St. Louis. She said she believes the three victims are 19, 20 and 23.

“I went to school with two of them and they were just really warm people to be around,” Cohen said. “I didn’t expect anything like this.”

Tres Hombres Mexican Restaurant and Bar will is set to reopen today and further closings will be posted on their social media accounts.

The victims are not being identified at this time and the investigation is currently active, according to Carbondale Police.
