Margaret Nesbitt, Chair of the ‘I Can Read!’ program, left, and Carbondale Mayor Joel Fritzler dance Saturday during the program’s annual celebration at the Elk’s Club of Carbondale. The evening included blues music, food and a silent auction that the free reading program uses to help pay for expenses. The program, established in 1999, is run by volunteers and helps any student with the desire to enhance their reading skills. It is based out of the Eurma C. Hayes Center in Carbondale. Their theory is “If a child can read and an adult can read, they can establish themselves to be somebody,” Nesbitt said. – Remy Abrought
