Carbondale police investigating death of a 5-year-old after being struck by vehicle

The Carbondale Police Department is investigating the death of a 5-year-old male child after being struck by a vehicle, according to Deputy Police Chief Stan Reno.
The fatal crash occurred near the 500th block of North Wall at 7:55 p.m. Monday evening, according to Carbondale police.
“It was determined that the child entered the roadway on foot and was struck by the front of a vehicle,” according to a Carbondale Police press release. “The driver attempted to swerve to avoid the child, but was unable to do so.”

After striking the child, the vehicle left the road and struck a utility pole, according to the release. The child was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation into this incident is continuing and the results of the investigation, to include an accident reconstruction, will be presented to the State’s Attorney at the conclusion of the investigation.

So sad to hear. I would say I feel bad for driver of the car. Whoever was supposed to be watching over the kid needs to be arrested and prosecuted for negligent homicide.
