Sophomore thrower Josh Freeman broke the SIU indoor shot put record held for 30 years by his throwing coach John Smith Jan. 25 at the Notre Dame Invitational. Freeman is ranked 12th nationally and second in theMissouri Valley Conference for shot put. Freeman also qualified for the Pan-Am Junior Athletics Championships in Medellin, Columbia in 2013 and said confidence played a key role. “When you spend three months out of the year training for something, you kind of have to go in with that confidence,” he said.JAKE HAINES • DAILY EGYPTIAN
