Heavy rainfall and possible flooding are predicted tonight in the Carbondale area.

In response to tonight’s predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms the Federal Emergency Management Agency encourages southern Illinois residents to prepare for the possibility of flooding for this week.

“Floods can happen anytime, even in winter months,” said FEMA Region V Administrator James K. Joseph in a press release. “Now is the time to make sure your family knows what to do to stay safe.

“Chances of precipitation are 100 percent, according to the National Weather Service’s website.

People should not attempt to walk or drive through flowing water Joseph said in a press release. Southern Illinois residents should also make sure their mobile phones are enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts for warning of extreme weather and other emergencies in the area.

According to the Weather Service’s website, Carbondale is expected to have heavy rain and showers beginning before 11 this evening.

Winds are expected to reach 14 to 17 mph and could gust as high as 25 mph.

During the winter months floodwaters can be extremely cold according to FEMA’s press release. Carbondale residents should be cautious as quick exposure to floodwaters could be life threatening.

According to FEMA’s press release, residents in affected areas should stay indoors if possible and ensure nothing valuable is stored in basements to avoid potential damage from unexpected flooding.
