Polovick has lived in Cairo since childhood and has seen the good times and the bad in the town of roughly 3,000. “There used to be several stores and over 40 bars in town but it’s gone downhill,” Polovick said. “A couple of buddies and I pitched in to buy the old union hall and made it into a mancave – we buy 10 cases of beer at a time and spend our time there.” Earlier this year, the US Housing and Urban Development department announced it was going to close the Elmwood and McBride housing projects in the river town, nestled between the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers.
