Connie Rhein, of Carbondale, stands during the AIDS Candlelight Vigil on Sunday at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Carbondale. The memorial served to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS and remember those who have died from the virus. Rev. Alan Rhein, Connie’s husband, said he and his wife have known several people who have died from AIDS. “I just think it’s important that we understand that people die,” Alan said. “People put a statement on it and they say, ‘well, they were gay.’ Well, that doesn’t have anything to do with it. People are sick, so how can we stop this AIDS epidemic? To me, that’s the issue.” — May 1, 2016, Carbondale, Ill.
