The Marion Kleinau Theatre will open its second original production of the performance season this week titled “30 Days of Confinement,” written and directed by JJ Ceniceros and assistant directed by Karthiga Veeramani.

The main character of the story, Joseph, played by Simon Rousset, is admitted into a punishment facility called Ranasana Institute of Corrections for 30 days, where people are punished for various workplace-related crimes. During his stay at the facility, he encounters several inmates whose crimes and convictions vary. Joseph attempts to escape from his confinement with help from his fellow inmates.

30 Days of Confinement also features performances from Anthony Zariñana, Savannah Palmer, Shelly Rawlins, Manuel Sanchez, Kelsey Fortier and more.

“It is a show based stylistically on absurdist theatre and minimalism,” Ceniceros said. “It’s basically my commentary on bureaucratic systems, institutions and immigration.”

Other issues like confinement, border policy, punishment policy and detainment are also addressed, he said.

The tragicomedy nature of the production touches on several serious issues in a way that is humorous and fun to watch, he said.

The production will include these issues throughout the plot with a satirical portrayal and a satisfying conclusion.

“It’s a really high-energy and fast paced show,” he said. “The people in it are really wonderful and magnificent.”

The production will run on Oct. 23, 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. at the Kleinau Theatre. Admission will be $5 for students and $7 for the general public.
