To keep up with new technology, SIUC has upgraded 80 percent of all the micro-computers in the campus computer labs with state-of-the-art equipment, and now the university must decide what to do with the old hardware.

Patty Cosgrove, Lab Manager for the Computer Centers, said that these new computers are much faster, have a lot more memory and will be equipped with CD Rom capabilities.

Rhonda Thompson, Shift Supervisor in the College of Technical Careers lab, says what the students see on the screen is a lot like what the computers were like last year, but better.

They are basically the same, but the students like them because they are much faster, Thompson said.

The new equipment, worth over $800,000, includes 156 I.B.M. Pentium 90’s, 64 Power Mac 7100’s, five sun work stations and four servers.

The computers being replaced are currently being stored in the Faner computer lab. Their future has not been determined.

Mike Williams, Executive Director for Budgeting and Information Services, said that one of two things could happen to them. One option is that the computers will be traded in to I.B.M. in return for a new financial processor.

The second option, which Williams says is more plausible, is that the computers will be distributed, upon a first-come, first-serve basis, to the different departments on campus.

Williams calls the deal with I.B.M. a longshot. He said the second option is more realistic.

In addition to new campus computer technologies, the computer lab that was formerly in room 9B in the C building has been moved to room 112 in the CTC building. The lab was moved in order to make room for a new media center in.

Cosgrove said many of the students do not know about the new lab at CTC. She said that the lab there is usually less crowded then the lab in Faner and is much closer for some of the students.

The lab is really close to Thompson Point, and that would be ideal for them (the students), Cosgrove said.

The computer lab in 1025 Faner is open Mon.-Thur., 7a.m.-3a.m.; Fri., 7a.m.-11p.m.; Sat., 10a.m.-6p.m. and Sunday from noon to midnight.

The computer lab in 21 Rehn is open Mon.-Thur., 7a.m.-6p.m. and Fri., 7a.m.-5p.m.

The computer lab in 121 CTC is open Mon.-Thur., 8a.m.-8p.m.; Fri., 8a.m.-5p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6pm.
