It’s gotta be the shoes!

SIUC junior Stelios Marneros was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference men’s cross-country Athlete of the Week.

Marneros led the Salukis to victory over Kansas and Southern Indiana this past Saturday by finishing first in a field of 28 with a time of 19:30.6 over the four-mile course.

Marneros was named MVC cross-country Athlete of the Week once last season, and also placed first in the MVC meet last season.

SIUC coach Bill Cornell said that Marneros is very deserving of the award and the fact that he wins makes him a good runner.

He’s a very dedicated young man, he said. He’s dedicated to his training, he eats the right food, and he prepares himself very well.

Cornell also said he wasn’t surprised that Marneros was picked as the Athlete of the Week.

It doesn’t surprise me that he was picked, he said. Most of the schools didn’t compete, and the one’s that did only ran five kilometers, so nobody really went at it hard.
