We didn’t have all of our starters, Bechler said. They shut us down, and we never got it together.
U of I took control of the game early and never let SIUC’s offense get the team back into the game. Bechler said the U of I dominated the packs and was able to shut down most of SIUC’s plays.
The men’s rugby team will play Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Men’s soccer team improves to 7-1 on the season
The SIUC men’s soccer club played a successful doubleheader at home against Austin Peay State University and Wabash Valley Saturday.
Against Austin Peay, the club scored three unanswered goals in a 3-0 victory.
The scoring was even more one-sided in the defeat of Wabash Valley, as SIUC won the game 7-1.

Club president Adam Kaiser said he is pleased with the effort his team is showing in the games so far.
The only loss has come in the Sept. 28 Saluki Invitational at Stehr Field. The team lost to the University of Illinois 2-1 in a game SIUC could have won, had there been more substitutes available.
Kaiser said Saturday’s game was marked by good passing.
I think passing was the main thing, Kaiser said. We were able to pass around people, and that set us up for a lot of shots.
SIUC had a balanced attack, as Byron Gale, John Hatch, Matt Wadiak, Brian Gleason and Yannick Abgrall scored at least one goal apiece.
SIUC will travel Saturday to the Centralia Correctional Facility to play against the prisoners.
International tournament continues at SIUC

Saturday and Sunday, there will be four games beginning at 10 a.m. at Stehr Field, and the games end each day at 4 p.m.
Members of the SIUC Triathlon Club will be competing in the Anna Biathlon meet in Anna Saturday. The meet will consist of a 5-kilometer run and an 18-mile bicycle race.
Club president Karen Tabor said she expects there to be more competition at the event than in previous years. Tabor finished first in her age group last year.
Two SIUC alumni finished first overall in the men’s and women’s divisions. Kevin Riseborough won overall in the men’s division, and Stacey Mulkey captured the women’s title.
The event Saturday will begin at 8 a.m. and will start at the Choate Mental Health and Development Center.
