The SIUC men’s swimming and diving team opens its season against Drury College Saturday at the Recreation Center, and coach Rick Walker knows the Salukis can’t take size for granted.

The women’s team will try to rebound from a 167.5 to 126.5 loss to the University of Notre Dame Oct. 11.

Walker said Drury is one of the toughest teams in Division II and will give the Salukis a competitive contest.

While Drury is Division II, they finished second (in their division) last year and are likely to win this year, Walker said.

Walker said the meet should be highly competitive for the start of the season.

We definitely will have to go in and compete well, or we will find ourselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard, Walker said.

Men’s top individuals will feature two seniors sprinter Jeff Boark and Steve Munz, who will swim the backstroke.

The women’s team features 14 freshmen in their second competitive meet of the year.

Women’s coach Mark Kluemper said he is awaiting Saturday’s meet to see how much his freshmen have improved since the Notre Dame defeat.

We have been practicing hard and have looked much better in practice the last couple of weeks, so I’m looking forward to Saturday, Kluemper stated in a press release. Drury has a good program, and they have improved a great deal in the last of years, so it should be an exciting meet.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving meet begins at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Recreation Center against Drury College.
