This movie’s script has the intelligence of a 15-year-old Nu Metal fan; it thinks random cursing is funny and tastelessness is comedic gold.

“Hell and Back,” directed by Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman and starring Nick Swardson and T.J. Miller, is childish to an offensive point and it is poorly made.

I expected to love this film. It has a cast full of great, alternative comedians like Miller, Kumail Nanjiani and former SIU student Bob Odenkirk.

It also uses a plot that could have been amazing in the hands of a competent director, which it unfortunately does not have.

There is humor deep down, but overall it comes off as offensive and bullying.

The best example of this kind of comedy is the constant reliance on a rape joke. This gag is offensive the first time, and this movie goes with it any chance it gets.

“Hell and Back” does however succeed a bit with perfect casting, even when it misuses them. 

Without them, the movie would just be beyond ignorant.
