James R. Staub, the interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and research, assumed the position permanently June 16.
But Kyle Perkins, the interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and research, formerly announced the appointment July 1. He said the appointment is subject to ratification by the Board of Trustees.
As interim associate vice chancellor position, Staub will continue to oversee hiring and personnel decisions involving all term and continuing faculty at the University.
Staub works alongside Perkins, keeping in close relations with issues in the Academic Affairs Department. Perkins said with just the two of them leading the office, he is pleased Staub will continue his duties permanently.
“He has been in the acting position for some time, and we have a great working relationship,” he said. “He has great information and expertise about the department.”
After completing his bachelor’s degree at the College of Wooster in 1975, Staub pursued his master’s and doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina.
Staub first joined the SIUC community three years after completing his doctorate in 1988 as an assistant geology professor. During his service within the geology department, he initiated the position of graduate program coordinator in 1995 and served under that title for the next two years.

In 2000, Staub assumed the duties of associate dean for budget and personnel in the College of Science. By filling this position, he delved into budget and personnel planning, a skill Staub uses in his current position.
Perkins said Staub’s prior experience as a teacher and as an administrator helped him move into the permanent position, and he thinks the committee picked the top candidate for the job.
“The job description is an additional credential,” he said. “They look for an outstanding researcher and teacher, and he is both.”
