Spt_brief_zc_10/17, Giat MVC Male Runner of the Week for third time of the season

SIU cross country runner Doron Giat has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Cross Country Runner of the Week for the third time of the season on Wednesday.

The junior recently dominated competition at the Saluki Invitational in the eight-kilometer race. His time of 25 minutes, 26.64 seconds was 12 seconds faster than Southern Indiana’s Joey Bryne.

Giat, who is from Ganei, Israel, currently has the sixth-fastest eight-kilometer time in MVC with his time 25:23.

Men’s cross country to Pre Nationals Saturday

The SIU men’s cross country squad will be hunkering down when it takes on some of the top competition in Midwest at the Pre Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., this Saturday.

Doron Giat and sophomore Eli Baker will likely lead all Saluki runners at the regionals. Baker finished 12th at the Saluki Invitational with his time 26:21.79.

The Pre Nationals serve as warm-up for the MVC conference championships, which take place Nov. 2.

Saluki baseball concludes fall practice

The SIU baseball team, which had its best season since 1990 last year, wrapped up its five-week long fall practice.

And the practice was solid, according to head coach Dan Callahan.

“This fall I thought the attitude and work ethic was good,” Callahan said in a press release. “I felt the intra-squad games were not only competitive, but spirited as well. Overall, I would classify it as a successful fall.”

The Salukis open play Feb. 14 against Centenary in Shreveport, La.
