Eyes Adrift no longer adrift

Three famous musicians have found their niche

Factoid:Eyes Adrift will perform at 10 p.m. on Tuesday at Copper Dragon

Other than the recent media buzz over the lawsuit between former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic and Courtney Love, Novoselic has been somewhat of a media recluse.

Part of the reason is because he has been busy with former Meat Puppets member, Curt Kirkwood, and former Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh in a project the trio has called Eyes Adrift.

Eyes Adrift, who will play at 10 p.m. Tuesday at Copper Dragon, started after Novoselic approached Kirkwood, at one of Kirkwood’s solo performances, about writing some songs together.

“I went to the gig and really enjoyed it,” Novoselic said in a press release. “We were hanging out before and after the show, and the conversation came up:’Well, what are you doing?’ ‘I’m not really doing much.’ I was playing in town here with a few colleagues, but just for fun. So it was like, ‘Why don’t we get together just for fun, too?'”

Each member has proven himself in his previous band. Eyes Adrift is the start of something new and different for them, often exceeding any expectation by fans that come to see them perform.

“People were really receptive; just knocked off their feet,” Gaugh said in the band’s press release. “You’d see these guys wearing their Nirvana, Meat Puppets and Sublime T-shirts, coming there expecting one thing.”

Since they began writing and rehearsing together, the three have produced a self-titled debut album on SpinART Records.

The main idea behind this band is to just play what comes natural to them. As Kirkwood puts it, “It’s rock. If you pigeonhole it, where would it go?”

All three members have a common interest in experimenting with various styles of music and have had similar personal experiences, which have only made the bond between Kirkwood, Novoselic and Gaugh stronger.

Kirkwood expects there to be more albums, more tours and new experiences.

“I feel a lot of longevity with this one,” Gaugh said. “It’s a timeless sound and something that will span bridges between the different ages. Kid tested, mother approved.”
