Ah. That glorious time of year when classes are put on hold for a full week so we can all rest and relax quietly at home with our parents.

Yeah, right. We’re not going to kid ourselves. We know what most college students are doing for spring break.

But as most of the SIUC population drives, flies and flees from Carbondale to warmer weather today, we would just like to remind everyone to have a fun, but safe trip.

Whether it is Panama City Beach or Cancun or even just home to Chicago, you’re leaving for one whole week of freedom. We just want to make sure you come back.

Ending up in jail might sound like a fabulous tale from your wild college days, but are you really going to want to have to call your parents for bail? Drinking so much that you’re sick in the bar in front of that incredibly good-looking member of the opposite sex isn’t so appealing either, especially when the bouncers kick you out and you have to find the local hospital to have your stomach pumped.

Yes, we’re 20-somethings, which usually renders us invincible right? Well, accidents happen. They sometimes even happen to college students on spring break.

So wherever you’re heading, travel safely. If you’re launching out for destinations unknown or some party hot spot for the week, keep an eye on your friends. College is the time to be young and have fun. But getting hurt or in trouble, and shaming yourself and SIUC through your actions, are not the way to do either.

So go. And return with the story of how your friends tried to make you do the limbo in the sand holding a daiquiri in each hand and how you fell down and spilled both drinks all over yourself.

Return with the photos of you and your best pals standing in front of the ocean in March in 80-degree weather, both of you sunburned after only two days.

Return with the Mardi Gras beads that are ever abundant no matter where you go to party. Return with a hand so full of stamps, it looks like a blur of ink. Return with plastic cups and a headache for souvenirs.

Just return. And bring the stories, photos and beads all back to Carbondale.
