Nothing wrong with Hooters
March 3, 2005
Dear Editor:I am writing in response to the column titled “Part II:The ‘breastaurants’.” I resent the justification of those that don’t support restaurants such as Hooters that states it’s not because they are “prudes” but because they “respect their bodies.”
I am a very self-respecting female surrounded by people that respect me and my body just the same, and I find absolutely nothing wrong with restaurants such as Hooters.
I find it appalling that this article goes beyond supporting or not supporting the Tekes, and right down to the right and wrong of objectification of women’s bodies. I am not labeled as anything coming close to disrespectable, and have known many who have worked or applied at Hooters. These girls don’t disrespect themselves. They are confident, beautiful women who know what they want and how to get it.

Britney Spears makes a living off showing her body, not because she’s skanky, but because she knows what sells, as do these Hooters girls. They are making a living, more often than not supporting themselves through other things, the way that they can make the most money.
So instead of considering these women to be anything less than respected, I suggest you take a look at your job, either part-time or full-time, and ask yourself if you are making a smart business decision, because that’s what I believe these girls are doing. Props to them for having enough pride, dignity, and self-confidence to do what they do and still hold their heads high (as they should) when dealing with criticism from people like you.
