Salukis shut out Billikens

The SIU baseball team bounced back strong from Tuesday’s disappointing extra inning loss to Illinois with a 6-0 victory over Saint Louis (11-32) Wednesday night at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill.

Bullpen struggles and fielding blunders spelled the Salukis’ doom Tuesday, but SIU (29-17) committed no errors Wednesday and starting pitcher Ryan Terry made the relievers’ job easy.

Terry improved his record to 4-0 with his seven-inning, two-hit shutout performance. The freshman right-hander struck out four before giving way to another freshman, Cody Dunbar of Herrin, who allowed just one hit in the final two innings.

Just eight hits were tallied in the game, which was played with wooden bats.

The Salukis scored four runs in the sixth inning to break the scoreless tie. Kevin Koski led off the inning with a single, extending his hit streak to 22 games. P.J. Finigan followed with a single of his own to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Finigan and Koski advanced to second and third on a failed pickoff attempt. After two consecutive outs, Finigan scored on a Matt Brewer fielder’s choice and Koski scored on an error by the pitcher. Ryan Enata then singled up the middle to score Brewer and Nathan Emrick to put the Salukis up 4-0.

In the seventh, Finigan scored on a wild pitch, and in the ninth, Emrick scored on a sacrifice fly by Dean Cademartori.

The third-place Salukis continue Missouri Valley Conference play Friday with the first game of a three-game series with second-place Wichita State.
