Athletes of the Week

Before football season has even started, senior quarterback Joel Sambursky is the Athlete of the Week for being named to the Payton Award watch list. The honor is bestowed to the best player in Division I-AA football in the nation.

Sambursky leads SIU in career touchdown passes with 43 and a completion percentage of 57.9 percent.

Sambursky was also a finalist for the award last season, finishing eighth in the balloting.

To SIU head coach Jerry Kill for being a strict disciplinarian. Junior punter Zach Kettlekamp was suspended the first two games of the season for violating a team handbook policy. Kill’s toughness shows what he demands of his team.

To Mohamed Mohamed, a freshman on the men’s cross country team, for easily having the most unique name on the squad. Also, Mohamed finished seventh in the Illinois Class 2A State Cross Country Championhip, so his name is not the only intriguing thing about him.

To first-year head volleyball coach Brenda Winkeler for trying to invigorate her team with some interesting programs. The competitive cauldron- a ranking system for performance – and a team council to facilitate communication are likely to add a little spark to the volleyball team.
