A Carbondale man was killed Friday when a car and the bicycle he was riding collided at the corner of South Wall and East Stoker streets, Carbondale Police said.

Richard Peterson, 47, of Carbondale, was riding his bicycle east on Stoker Street about 11 a.m. Friday when he rode into South Wall and was struck by Olivia Watters, a third-year law student at SIUC, according to the police report. The bicyclist entered Wall Street in the path of the vehicle.

Peterson, originally of Clay City, was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where he died of head injuries later Friday afternoon, Carbondale Police Sgt. Hank Banycky said.

Banycky said no tickets have been issued at this time. The crash remains under investigation by the Carbondale Police.

Driving east on Stoker Street from the Recreation Center to Wall Street, bushes and a pine tree obstruct the view of automobiles traveling in the southbound lane. Stoker Street ends at Wall Street at a T-intersection, with a stop sign for traffic turning onto Wall Street.
