The trial for the two men charged with the murder of a Carbondale man is scheduled to start Monday at the Jackson County Courthouse.

Korey House, 18, and Kenneth Vann, 23, both of Murphysboro are charged with first-degree murder for their alleged involvement in the Aug. 10 killing of 19-year-old Gilbert Feliciano.

Carbondale police responded to a shooting on Aug. 10 in the 800 Block of East Walnut Street. When police arrived, they found Feliciano lying in the parking lot of the Phillip Street Apartments. He had been shot in the head. Feliciano was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, then to a hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., where he later died, the police report said.

House turned himself into police custody five days later. Carbondale Police, with help from Chicago Police, were able to track down Vann in Englewood, a neighborhood on the city’s south side. Vann allegedly ran from police and assaulted two officers before he was taken into custody, a police report said.

Vann is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. House is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, according to the Jackson County Web site.

First-degree murder is a class M felony, which carries a potential sentence of 20 to 60 years or the death penalty. Jackson County State’s Attorney Mike Wepseic, who is prosecuting the case, said the county would not seek the death penalty.

During Vann’s preliminary hearing in September, Sgt. Stan Reno of the Carbondale Police Department testified that Feliciano had an argument with an ex-girlfriend over the telephone. She, along with two other women, picked up Vann and House and drove to Feliciano’s apartment. After they arrived, Vann approached Feliciano and asked if he was the person from the telephone. When he answered, Vann shot Feliciano, Reno said.
