Golf finishes season
November 5, 2006
Not much changed from first round action for the SIU men’s and women’s golf teams.
At the end of day one, the men’s team was in second place while the women’s team was in first.
On the final day, the teams remained in the same position. The men’s team finished 13 under par, good for a runner-up finish at the Buffalo Rock/Southern Showdown.

Meanwhile, the women’s team won the Missouri Valley Conference Preview.
Junior Andy Rauscher finished the tournament 12 under par to claim his first individual title this season.
Head coach Leroy Newton said he was pleased with how the team finished the fall season and was proud of the their tournament finish.
“Nothing really surprised us, we knew what we were capable of going into this,” Newton said. “If we had played a little bit better, we could have won, but the team has really improved.”
Tied for first going into the 18th hole, Rauscher needed a tough shot to clinch the victory.
He dropped a chip shot from the sand to win.
Rauscher finished the first round at 8 under par and dominated the field to win the tournament.

“I knew a couple of guys were close to me, so it came down to the final hole,” he said. “I pulled out a bunker shot, and that won it for me.”
The women’s team featured a pair of Salukis in the spotlight at the MVC Preview.
At the end of the first round, juniors Kelly Gerlach and Christine Zoerlein were both in the top 10.
The duo would end up in a tie for first place with scores of 153.
Zoerlein said they were a couple of holes apart from each other and had no idea they would be tied for first in the end.
“We were both trying our best for the team without worrying about the individual title,” Zoerlein said. “It’s exciting that we both won because we live together, and we can battle each other for it later.”
Head coach Diane Daugherty said the team went into day two with a good chance of winning.
The women’s team, though, maintained its position and finished as the runner-up in the tournament.
“The weather conditions were rainy and cold, so we had to remain patient,” Daugherty said. “There’s a lot of parity in this league, so we knew we had to pull together in the final round.”
