Poshard to fix dissertation

By Gus Bode

The committee that reviewed plagiarism allegations against SIU President Glenn Poshard released a report Thursday that said the president’s 1984 doctoral dissertation contained “inadvertent plagiarism” and he should correct the mistakes in the document.

The SIU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept the recommendations of the committee in a special meeting Thursday afternoon.

The committee recommended the university take no further action, such as a formal hearing, regarding the allegations.

Poshard’s dissertation will be withdrawn from Morris Library and University Microfilms, and the document will be replaced with a corrected version prepared by Poshard.

The DAILY EGYPTIAN analyzed Poshard’s 1984 dissertation in August and found 14 cases of text that appeared to be lifted directly from other sources without citation. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported last month it found similar but less severe cases of verbatim text without citation in Poshard’s 1975 master’s thesis.
