Fight breaks out at Lewis Park

An investigation is ongoing for whether members of the John A. Logan Community College men and women’s basketball teams were involved in a fight Monday at Lewis Park Apartments, said a John A. Logan campus safety officer.

Shanequa Boyd, a sophomore at John A. Logan studying nursing and member of the women’s basketball team, said both teams were at Lewis Park Monday night when a group of men, armed with sticks and knives, attacked the members of the men’s team outside. Boyd said the men being attacked then ran inside her apartment at Lewis Park after the attackers said they had guns in their possession.

“This bunch of boys just ran on in like the world had ended,” Boyd said. “They were really scared.”

Boyd said the attackers threw bricks at her apartment door, which was later knocked off its hinges, though Boyd said she did not know exactly how.

Just after 8 p.m., seven Carbondale Police Department vehicles, one Illinois State Police vehicle and one SIUC Department of Public Safety vehicle were on the scene.

After police arrived, Boyd said all the men involved ran and a few female John A. Logan students began arguing with her and members of the women’s team.

“The girls came up to the door and started running towards us,” Boyd said.

Boyd said the women fought until police came in and used tear gas on the female attackers. Boyd said two females were arrested on the scene, but this was unable to be confirmed. Boyd said she believed the fight was over an attacker’s girlfriend.

Boyd said several of the women who attacked her were waiting outside of the women’s basketball teams practice Tuesday. She said campus safety was notified and the women were escorted off campus.
