Banter: Proudest sports achievement
February 25, 2009
Spencer Khrin, a high school basketball player from Southwood High in Wabash, Ind., recently scored 11 points in the final 46.1 seconds to lead his team to a comeback victory. What is your proudest athletic achievement?

One time before a Saluki men’s basketball practice, the beat writers played a little pick up game before player and coach interviews. Yours truly was draining some outside jumpers before deciding to drive the lane. On my way to the hoop I got hacked by a fellow beat writer, Todd Hefferman, but I still scored the bucket.

Once I nearly turned an unassisted triple play, but the ump ruled the catch a trap. What happened was I was the second baseman and there were runners on first and second with no outs. A weak line drive was hit over the pitcher, which I ran in and slid to catch (I contend I caught it before it hit the ground). I got up, took two steps back, stepped on second and threw to first, and it was ruled a double play. And if hockey counts, I also once scored a goal after my intended saucer pass was deflected 20-30 feet into the air off an opponent’s stick, the goalie lost sight of the puck and it dropped on his back and into the net.

Wow, I feel like one of those guys reminiscing on the good old days.’ Mine would probably be the time I hit a walk-off homer in little league when I was about 13.’ My team was Bad News Bears-esque, and we somehow took the best team into extra innings. Sure enough, I come up with two outs in the 10th as the winning run.’ I somehow smashed the ball over the left field fence, and enjoyed my brief moment in the sun. It’s either that or when I scored on a blocked punt in high school as a defensive lineman.’ Best two-yard TD run ever!
