Banter: Can the Blue Jays be the team to beat?

By Gus Bode

The Toronto Blue Jays are in first place in the AL East with the league’s best record. Can the Blue Jays stay on top or will they fall off their perch?

Luis C. Medina:

Toronto will go as far as Roy Halladay’s right arm will take it. Unfortunately for the Jays, he pitches only once every five days. While the Jays do have talent, it’s not good enough talent to knock off the Rays, Red Sox and Yankees. Besides, it won’t be long until Steinbrenner buys the Jays to keep them out of the playoffs.

Ryan Voyles:

I had to do a double take when I saw the Blue Jays in first today. Really? The Blue Jays? They definitely have talent on their squad, but the rest of the division has more. By May they should be back in their comfortable third or fourth place spot, just ahead of the worst birds in the division ‘- the Orioles.

Derek Robbins:

The Jays have some solid pitching, but we have to remember what time of year it is. I mean, for goodness sakes, the San Diego Padres are playing well. The Padres! I would love to say that I think the Jays could stay on top, but really, the AL East is just too darn tough. I see them finishing maybe third. Anything higher is blind optimism.
