The orphan epidemic
June 16, 2011
A malnourished orphan lies in a crib May 23 at a hospital in Limbe, Haiti. The United Nations Children’s Fund estimated there were roughly 380,000 orphans in Haiti in 2007, a number which has since grown because of several earthquakes and diseases that have ravaged the country. Haiti’s lack of sanitation service, hot water and trash collection has increased the spread of infectious diseases through personal contact and unclean water. Heavy rains in Haiti for the past four weeks have also caused widespread flooding and mudslides, which contributed to the spread of cholera. James Durbin | Daily Egyptian
