For those who want a place to be social, yet need a good workout, the Recreation Center provides trainers, fitness classes and numerous facilities that bring people together.

“The Recreation Center is here to provide students and faculty resources they need to reach their full potential socially, emotionally and physically,” said David Galvin, graduate assistant for instructional programs in the Recreation Center.

The Recreation Center is open to all students and provides classes such as boxing, karate, dance, yoga and much more. The ‘rec’ also provides outdoor tennis courts, an Olympian-sized pool, basketball courts, a climbing wall and weight training rooms.

Casey Smith, a junior from Chicago studying biology, said she goes to the rec to work out and get a peace of mind.

“I go to the rec to work out and to relax at the end of the day,” Smith said. “It’s nice to have a place I can go after class to focus on me.”

Smith, along with many SIUC students, use the Recreation Center as a fitness center and social hotspot.

“Me and my friends take Zumba classes every Thursday,” Smith said. “The dances are so fun you forget you’re really working out.”

Galvin said the recreation center provides over 40 sports clubs and intramural sports.

“Most of the classes are free for students,” Galvin said.

The Recreation Center also provides services for students with disabilities and children.

“The facilities are awesome,” Galvin said. “We just want students to get the most they can from our facilities.”
