Three men’s basketball players leave since Lowery let go, Hinson hired

Two more men’s basketball players have expressed interest in leaving the team, which may open four positions for coach Barry Hinson to fill for next season.

Freshman forward Treg Setty has asked for a release from his SIU men’s basketball scholarship, Media Services Director Tom Weber said Monday. Weber also confirmed Monday that incoming freshman recruit Bobo Drummond has asked for a release from his letter of intent.

According to a source close to the situation, Setty made his decision when he went home to Maysville, Ky., during the weekend.

“I’d just like to say thank you to Saluki Nation and I love this place but (I) just need to be closer to my family due to health issues,” Setty said.

Setty played all 31 games for the Salukis this season, starting in 10 of them. He averaged 16.9 minutes per game and scored 4.4 points per game. Drummond is a senior at La Lumiere Prep School in La Porte, Ind., which is ranked 35 out of 50 best boys basketball team in the country by ESPN.

Setty is the second player from last year’s team to ask for a release from the Salukis after former SIU coach Chris Lowery was fired March 2 and coach Barry Hinson was hired March 28.

Freshman forward Dantiel Daniels asked for his release Wednesday, although Weber said neither have been granted their releases yet.

Setty tweeted April 10 that he struggled with Daniels’ decision to leave SIU and that he wanted to finish what they started.

The athletic department announced Lowery’s former assistant coaches — Brad Korn, Ron Smith and Anthony Stewart — were let go April 10, one day before Daniels’ reportedly asked for his release.

Drummond was one of Lowery’s two recruits for the 2012-2013 season. Recruit Travis Wilkins was granted a release from his letter of intent shortly after Lowery was fired, meaning coach Barry Hinson has four open scholarships for next season pending the approval of Daniels’ and Setty’s release.

A message left for Hinson went unreturned Monday.
