Hampton undrafted, signs with San Francisco 49ers

Although his name was not called at the NFL Draft, Jewel Hampton is now a member of an NFL team.

The junior running back agreed to a contract with the San Francisco 49ers in the hours following the draft’s completion.

Hampton joins a team with an already crowded backfield, and he will have to contend with running backs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James and former Saluki Brandon Jacobs.

The Iowa transfer performed well in his only year at SIU, as he rushed for 1,121 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Salukis en route to Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year honors.
