Treg Setty can go back home.

The forward will be granted permission to talk to schools ‘close’ to his hometown of Maysville, Ky., Athletic Director Mario Moccia said Monday.

“Treg said he was homesick, and he wanted to get closer to home. So if all of a sudden, he wanted to go to California, that would be opposite of what he told us,” Moccia said. “We want to get him closer to home.”

Moccia said the Athletic Department will grant Setty a release to a school closer to his hometown, which is 370 miles away from Carbondale, but further discussions would be needed if he wanted to go to a school further away from Maysville, Ky.

Setty said he hasn’t been told he’s allowed to contact other schools pending SIU’s approval, but  figured it would happen eventually.

Setty’s request to be released from his scholarship was denied late in the spring semester because Moccia said the Athletic Department wanted to protect the school’s academic standing with the NCAA.

The NCAA approved a change Aug. 11 to their Academic Progress Rate policy, which ranks every sport inside a school’s athletic department based on academic standards, such as GPA and graduation rates.

Moccia said Setty fulfilled his academic requirements to the school, which was the major factor in the denial of Setty’s request for a release from his scholarship April 11. Forward Dantiel Daniels rescinded his request for a release from his scholarship April 29.
