Devon Heifner, front of boat, and Jackson Shasteen, rear, hand paddle the remainder of the race after their boat suffered a mechanical malfunction during the mechanized boat category of the 43rd Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday at the Carbondale Reservoir at Evergreen Park. Heifner and Shasteen are students in Mike Fleming’s principles of technology class at Carterville High School. “Win or lose, our goal is to see how fast we can get the boat going,” Fleming said. “We did really well around the first two buoys, obviously we broke a shaft, but it worked the way we wanted it to up until that point so it was a success.
