Pulido leads Saluki swim and dive to split in Illinois tri-meet

The Saluki women’s swimming and diving team split an in-state tri-meet on Friday, defeating Illinois State 183-116 and falling to host Illinois 189-110. Celia Pulido led the way for SIU, taking first place in three events.

Joining Pulido in the winner’s circle of the 200-yard medley relay were Ali Robertson, Jasmine Rau and Masha Zhukova. Pulido also won the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.

Olivia Herron won the 200-yard breaststroke, and finished second in the 100-yard event. Tamara De La Torre took second in the 200-yard butterfly, and Elli Oploh claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Oploh, Zhukova, Pulido and Nour Eleish finished third in the 400-yard freestyle relay by 0.1 seconds. Jules Atkinson took third in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Ella Kerr and Brooklyn Anderson took third in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke respectively. Karen Rodriguez Cardenas rounded out the third-placers for the Salukis in the 200-yard freestyle.

Lucia Romero Endolz took fourth in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Oploh placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, and Robertson and Kerr finished fourth in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke respectively.

The swimming and diving team will host the Missouri Valley Conference showcase starting on Friday, Oct. 21 and continuing the next day. This event will see all of the Valley teams compete at the SIU Recreation Center in Carbondale.
