There are 1,980 new cases of COVID-19 and 50 deaths in Illinois since April 26, according to an announcement by Director of Illinois Public Health Dr. Ngozi Ezike at the governor’s daily press conference.

This brings the total to 45,883 total cases and 1,983 deaths. In Illinois, there have been 227,628 tests related to COVID-19 with 12,676 administered in the last 24 hours, Ezike said.

Ezike said there are six new symptoms that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified with COVID-19. 

The initial symptoms were fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

New symptoms are: chills, repeated shaking with chills, headache, sore throat, more muscle pain and new loss of taste or smell. Victims will experience these symptoms two to 14 days after exposure, Ezike said. 

“The guidance that remains unchanged is the importance of staying home. If you have to go out please wear a mask and remain six feet from others,” Ezike said. 

Gov. JB Pritzker addressed downstate Illinois, saying the virus isn’t just affecting Chicago.

Two of the top five counties with infection rates are downstate, Pritzker said. 

In order the counties with the most cases are: Cook, Jasper, Lake, Will and Randolph, Pritzker said. The top two counties with rates of death per capita are Jasper and Monroe.
