Illinois has 1,222 new cases and 74 deaths due to COVID-19 since April 13, according to a statement made by Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, at the governor’s daily press conference. 

This brings the total to 23,247 cases and 866 deaths in Illinois. 

Jackson County added two additional cases of COVID-19 from yesterday according to the Jackson County health department. 

Gov. JB Pritzker said Illinois is doing a better job at flattening the curve by extending the days it takes for cases and deaths to double. 

In Illinois, it now takes about 8.2 days for COVID-19 cases to double and 5.5 days for deaths, compared to 2 days for cases and 2.5 days for deaths at the end of March and beginning of April, Pritzker said. 

Pritzker said that the curve may not flatten if Illinoisans don’t adhere to the state at home order and could even go back up. 

“We have to design a new normal. A way of life that will carry us to the other side and while that day isn’t here yet, my team and I are working to bring that about,” Pritzker said.
