Weber offered position at SIU, reports say

The position for SIU’s basketball coach is Bruce Weber’s if he wants it, according to a Monday ESPNChicago.com article.

Weber has been suggested to be SIU’s top pick for the position since he was fired as Illinois’ head coach March 9. An anonymous source told ESPN that Weber, who coached SIU from 1998-2003,  has been offered the position and is expected to interview.

Former SIU coach Chris Lowery was fired March 1 after the Salukis completed their worst season in school history with a 66-51 loss to Indiana State during the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

Prior to his position as coach, Lowery was an assistant coach under Weber who took the Salukis to two NCAA tournaments before he left SIU to coach the University of Illinois basketball program in 2003.

During the press conference March 2 that announced Lowery’s termination, Athletic Director Mario Moccia said the search committee hopes to have a new coach announced before the NCAA Final Four, which is March 31-April 2.

Moccia declined interview requests and has said he will not talk about the status of the position until the search is complete.
