Salukis defeat Memphis 82-75

The Salukis moved to 2-1 on the season behind a strong team effort to defeat the Memphis Tigers 82-75.

The last time SIU started a season 2-1 was the 2008-09. The team finished 9-19 that season.

Junior forward Dyana Pierre led the way for the Salukis with her 23rd career double double. She finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Pierre shot 76 percent from the floor.

“Everyone was in it, everyone’s energy was high,” Pierre said. “Our defense was great and the offense was really patient.”

Sophomore point guard Rishonda Napier added 17 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. She shot a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Napier scored 20 points in each of the first two games this season and leads the team with 57 points this season.

Freshman guard Kylie Giebelhausen had the best game of her young career. She finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks.

Junior forward Azia Washington recorded 16 of her 18 points in the first half. She shot 66 percent from behind the three-point line.

Memphis was led by junior guard Ariel Hearn who had 23 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Salukis will play Southeast Missouri State on Friday at 6:05 p.m. at Saluki Arena.

Last season, the Salukis lost to SEMO 72-50.
