No Swan song for SIU

By Jack Robinson

SIU basketball took a hit Tuesday, when the university announced guard Josh Swan underwent a career-ending knee surgery. The surgery was a result of an injury Swan obtained in a Feb. 2 Missouri Valley Conference game against Illinois State University.

The junior from Atlanta had an unfortunate run with injuries throughout his Saluki career. In the 2011-2012 season, Swan missed the final 10 games of the season due to a leg injury.

When healthy, Swan proved to be an asset for the Salukis. In his 2012-2013 campaign, Swan shot 44 percent from the field, a 15-percent improvement from his freshman season.

Swan seemed to shine in bright spots as he shot 51 percent in Missouri Valley Conference play. In the Dec. 15 game against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Swan made a diving attempt for the ball in the final seconds, scoring to give SIU the 72-70 win.

SIU head coach Barry Hinson said Swan’s presence will be missed this year.

“We were really counting on Josh for this season, based upon his improvement last year. He was the epitome of a guy doing more than you expect,” Hinson said in an official SIU statement.
