Cross-country season comes to an end at NCAA regionals

The cross-country team ran its last event of the year at the NCAA Midwest Regional Friday.

The men’s team finished eighth and the women finished 15th.

The men were led by junior Oscar Medina, senior Michael Castel and junior Juan Carrera.

Medina earned a spot on the All-Region team after finishing 23rd with a time of 30:41.6.

Castel finished 33rd with a time of 30:49.7, Carrera finished 35th with a time of 30:50.1.

Sophomore Brandon Shemonia and junior Evan Ehrenheim were the fourth and fifth runners for the Salukis and finished 88th and 107th respectively.

Oklahoma State won the event behind the performance of senior Kirubel Erassa who finished first with a time of 30:09.5. This was the 10th Regional victory for the Cowboys in the last 12 years.

Juniors Kelley Gallagher, Krista Menghini and Kristen Levi led the women’s team.

Gallagher finished 40th with a time of 21:03.1. She finished first for the Salukis in all but one event this season.

Menghini finished 73rd with a time of 21:29.8 and Levi finished 88th with a time of 21:37.1.

Senior Sadie Darnell and senior Mobola Rotibi rounded out the top-five SIU runners with their 100th and 170th place finishes respectively.

Junior Courtney Frerichs of University of Missouri-Kansas City was the fastest runner with a time of 19:58.6 but Iowa State University won the team event for the fifth-straight year.

The cross-country runners will participate in the track and field season, which begins on Dec. 6 at the Saluki Fast Start at SIU.
