Gabe Wece, center, of Carbondale, looks over his duck call gear Saturday outside the Leona Brust Civic Center in Ullin. Wece was waiting to compete in the two-man duck calling competition held during the Cache River Days celebration, in which he placed first. Contestants are judged on their ability to simulate a variety of duck calls, including greeting calls, feed calls and mating calls. Wece said he practices for calling competitions in the same way an athlete would practice for a game.
