SIU out duels EIU in Saluki Fall Classic

The Saluki women’s tennis team won nine of its matches in its only home meet of the fall season.

SIU finished with seven wins and three losses in singles play and two wins and four losses in doubles against Eastern Illinois University.

Senior Natasha Tomishima and sophomore Meagan Monaghan finished undefeated in doubles improving their record to 7-2 on the season. The duo won both of their matches 8-6, defeating Eastern’s freshman Grace Summers and senior Sephora Boulbahaiem in the first match and juniors Ali Foster and Hannah Kimbrough in the second match.

Tomishima and Monaghan were the only duo able to record wins in doubles.

Tomishima added two singles wins and finished undefeated for the day. She defeated EIU’s sophomore Kelly Iden 6-1, 6-4 and Grace Summers 8-3.

The Salukis added four more victories in singles play. Monaghan defeated Iden 8-5 but was defeated by Summers 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.

Senior Gisela Cairo Baza won two matches against the Panthers while freshmen Athena Chrysanthou and Hannah Wich each won a match.

Tomishima, Monaghan, Chrysanthou and Ariadna Cairo Baza will represent the Salukis at the ITA Regional tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma later this week.
