Vietnam War veteran and SIU alumnus Charlie Howe, of Carbondale, left, holds a sign next to Evan Kroeker, a member of the Peace Coalition of Southern Illinois, during a vigil to end war, poverty and climate change Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Friendship Park in Carbondale.

Howe said he was so disgusted by his experience in Vietnam that he has protested wars ever since.

“Wars are for profit and they kill people in the process,” Howe said. “War is for the advantage of the rich corporations.”
